What does the trade deficit mean?
A merchandise trade deficit occurs when the value of imported goods is greater than the value of exported goods. In the latest release, imports exceeded exports by roughly Rs 148.74 billion.
The figure is important, but it does not by itself tell you whether imports are productive, consumptive, temporary or strategically useful. A better interpretation requires looking at product composition, partner dependence, domestic capacity and trends over time.
